To help pay for their expeditions, the Johnsons would bring back a few animals a la Frank Buck, which they later sold. (The San Diego Zoo’s first two gorillas where obtained from them in the early 1930s.) Incidentally, the Johnsons and Frank Buck were friends. In his autobiography ALL IN A LIFETIME, Buck recounts how, in January 1937, both he and Martin were the guest speakers at an Adventurers Club banquet held in New York City. Since he and the Johnsons were leaving for the West Coast the next day, Martin suggested that they take the same commercial flight so they could travel together. Buck (who disliked being confined in small spaces and who flatly refused to fly) declined, saying that he’d rather drive. Martin jokingly remarked that by the time Buck got to Ohio, they would already be in California. Two days later, when Buck got to Toledo, he learned that the flight the Johnsons had taken had crashed near Newhall, California, killing Martin and seriously injuring Osa.
