From Buckles



This is how the prop looked when Mack trained the Besalou elephant act at Louie Goebel's place the winter of 1953-54,  hence the reason for the slots seen in the previous picture.
"Opal" would walk across on her hind legs then turn around and return on her front legs (occasionally dropping her trunk down between the two rails to smell around) and after returning to the pedistal at right, go into her classic one-foot stand.
Mac told me that she quickly outgrew the prop and after the first season eliminated the rails, much to the delight of the prop crew.
