I don't remember what the occasion was, but my folks took us back stage and we saw "Sally Rand" perform. When we went back to our trailer I got two cardboard fans, took off all my clothes and preceded to do "Sally's" dance. (My family were at the trailer next door. I was alone.) They came in and I had my two cardboard fans, doing my turns, kicks, dips, placing the fans at the important places. My family said they watched me for awhile before interrupting me. I was two, and yes I do remember it. I guess you could call that my first public dance as they had friends with them. I thought "Sally Rands" dance was beautiful.....Barbara.....

I believe that back somewhere in my ramblings I mentioned that my family were very close friends with Peggy "Henderson" McDonald's family, Lou Henderson her father, and her sister Ruth "Henderson" Swank. Well my sisters were named after their girls. Billie, Peggy, and so on to make this story longer. What I was trying to get to we visited a lot. Ruth "Henderson" Swank, had one of the most beautiful acts I have ever seen. NOT CIRCUS. But so very beautiful. It was a bath tub scene. She came out in this lovely negligee, with her hair up with a beautiful ribbon. The tub was transparent with delicate carvings outlining the tub. There were bubbles, and "Ruth" started to do her act. There are hardly words to describe her act. It was just so very tasteful and beautiful. She was such a star. She pulled the ribbon out of her hair, lovely long hair. Of course this was after she had bathed. She ended up putting on her stockings and another fabulous gown. AS I understand it her husband staged, designed, and built, this fantastic act. I do hope there are still other people out there that remember this act......Barbara......

Wonderful Barbara! I think I saw Ruth's act or a reprise in This Was Burlesque, back when sex was sexy, not disgusting.

Thanks Chic and would you know/remember if Ms Rand appeared at the '39 World's Fair?

According to something I just came across, Sally had a Nude Ranch, gives a whole new meaning to what Horace Greeley said..."Go West young man, go West" Yahooo

So Paul according to an older pal

from the West Coast there was also

A 39 World's Fair in San Francisco

on Treasure Island titled "Golden

Gate Exposition" where she played

He also told me she had a feature

in Billy Rose's "Casa Manana" in

Ft Worth's 1936 Texas Centennial

The girl certainly got around

In 36 she bought the Music Box

theater in San Francisco as well

Barbara,
Thank you for your remembrances of my Mother’s act. She was a wonderful dancer and a lovely person and the best mother in the world. I remember the bathtub act very well as I always caught her wardrobe off stage for her. She and Aunt Peggy were very close growing up and of course, they worked with Grandpa, Lew Henderson, in his juggling act. When Mother left the act, Aunt Billie (Schuller) replaced her…then when both Peggy & Billie left the act Grandpa replaced them with a chimp! (You can’t keep a good trouper down.)
Mom died in 1959, so no, she never was with This Was Burlesque…my first husband was however. He had the candy and programs and I got to spend about three years with the show. It was great fun! Both Ann & her husband, Mike were wonderful to me.
Barbara, thanks again for bringing back such wonderful memories of my mother.

Way back when I was 15-16 I ane a buddy would hitch hike to Mnpls-Stpl ande visited the great Minn4esota S6tate Fair and in subsequent vyears saw Sally band Gypsy Rose Lee. There was an adult only-age sign in front but the ticket seller paid no notice and we went in. Shows were great and now I realized they were grinding out 4 and 5 a day. Quick Ballay out front, out the side and in the front. You can be sure it was impressional to a young teen. FAST FORWARD. MR and I went to local GOLDEN APPLE dinner show here in SARAFLO a few years back and saw A FUNNY THING HAPPENED AT THE FORUM and guest star in her 70s was Sally Rand doing her FAN DANCE. She looked great. After the show she was in the lobby utographing pictures. Mary Ruth recalled Mayme Ward telling how she did the costumes for Sally's "NUDE RANCH " show and how she liked Sally.[two great show broads to be sure] and she approached Sally at a table and said that she wonder5ed if Sally would remember Mayme Ward and Sally lit up and said, something like, Oh my God Dear Mayme what has happened to her and etc. She went on about Mayme and what a great person she was, . It was a nice feeling as we left remembering our own great tim4es knowing and being with her so many years.johnny

There never really was a "Sally Rand"

She was Helen Gould Beck & she died

in 1979 at the age of 75

That was Billy Rose's Casa Manana
