Horse of the year show #7

Between jumping events, the arena needs to be regularly harrowed. To make this “down time” more interesting for the audience, heavy shire horses were once used, performing complicated patterns including a cartwheel movement and ending with a final surge down the arena with all twelve horses lined up abreast. The famous musician Sir Malcolm Sargent helped to suggest music for this event. Over the years, the selections included “Land of Hope and Glory,” “Boys of the Old Brigade,” “O Peaceful England,” “Scipio,” “Light Cavalry” and “A Fine Old English Gentleman.” In recent years, this task has been done by tractors, which is far less spectacular.
