I have said in the past that I have met to me the top five cat trainers as Follows (Charlie Bauman),(Gunther Gabel)(Gene Michon)and of course these two characters

Glenn Sullivan said...

Mr Hall, no disrespect intended as I have only seen the 'Top Five' on video. Would Jim Clubb not deserve to be in this distinguished company?. Just a thought.
Cheers

J8ust a second. The only animal act that ever stopped the show in the "hay day" of the circus in Madison square garden and John Ringling posponed the opening in the Garden so that he could get better from an injury some two weeks. 46 nyears a star in the great cage. Mr. Clyde Beatty. I saw him many times over the years and believe I am qualified to make an assessment. thanks. johnny. PS he was in the day of Court. etc. you name em. Even Baumann.

My comment does not past doubt about these trainers mentioned in Mr. Hall and Sullivan comments. I agree and only include Mr. Beatty. But how about the Captains, Cristy, Engerer, Kuhn and The prince [Bogino and professer Kellar. Almost forgot the great "prince El Kigordo" Also Capt. Terrel terrible Jacobs. Just a few off the top of my decaying mind. johnny

Thanks Johnny for your comments

I certainly consider Clyde Beatty

among the top list no matter whose

Thought that statement would get a rise
I quote "That I have met" to me, the top five cat trainers' not the top trainers that ever lived?
However, I also do not recall ever meeting Mr.Jim Clubb. I did meet Mr.Clyde Beatty; Great showman but boys it is sort of like seeing a guy do a round off back somersault, then you see a guy do a round off double back somersault using a spring type flooring aid, then a guy does a round off double back on the ground. In short, look at the tricks produced. Like it or not, I will stand on what I said. Also, the Best bear trainer I have "met" was Filatov. Oh yes I said it, and they are from the USSR

Ps the list of Whose who in the cat trainers lots of great guys and performers and fabulous showman
I am talking about tricks monkey shines or di-dos sort of like hearing about a six man high in a teeterboard act and four of them hanging on a perch pole with a string tied to the top mounter?????
Boy what arguments that can prouduce when I see a true five man high with no perch pole or strings attached that will get my vote any day yes I said it

Naturally animal trainers see things differently than the guys in the stands but the bottom line is: who do the public pay their money to see.

Show business by definition has to do with the way audiences see an act or performer and Beatty was widely acclaimed by the public for many years.

Valentin Filatov was truly 1 of the

all time great animal trainers

I was impressed with how his bears

were able to handle all the props

as well as master their routines

My list includes Ursula Botcher

& Albert Rix in the bear category

This banter brings to mind a story my mother, AKA Zoppe-Zavatta riders, once told of working somewhere in a display with two other riding acts in years gone by. One was Hannefords, the other act I do not remember. The jest of the story; In his younger days, Tommy Hanneford could be a bit of a pain in the butt to work with in a display. My mother recalled the owner of the show making a statement that Tommy was the greatest bareback rider which kind of ruffled my mother's feathers, to which she responded, Poodles Hanneford is a great rider, the Cristianis are great riders, Tommy Hanneford? All he knows to do well is drop his pants. The show owner replied yes, but he stops the show. My mother then told him, You want to see me stop the show ?I will go out tonight in the show and drop my pants if you want to stop this show. Knowing my mother, the show owner told her that would not be necessary and said he got the point. Great riders versus great showman ?
Great animal trainers /Trainers of animals,?

OK Jimmy I just can't hold back now

How bout the difference between the

true trainers & the "presenters"

I know Cuneo had some of each

Many of us have our own thoughts

on seperating the flash & trash

from those we admire & respect

Let's see if anybody cares to stir

To Chic
First off, my father never like to use the term "the greatest" when discussing acts. When an act impressed him, he would say
"That is, I believe, the best I have ever seen", or "that act is pretty good". His words for that act was "power house", and "the guy is a great showman". His term for great audience appeal. I don't think I would ever put or use the terms Flash or trash. Sort of like watching the Olympics,
Gymnastics comes to mind. There will be the top three; does not by any means mean that the other competitors are trash. Being the top three? What is going to happen in four years? There have been so many competitors in the cat act area from Beatty, TJ, Court, Baudi, Bauman, El Kigardo, Anthony, Doerty, Story, Haworth, Walch, Hoover, Hartman, Reagan, Gossing, S.Johnson, D.Clemens, Berchole, M Stark, Bale, P.Fritz, Logan. The list goes on all of which made the grade. Still the list of the top five ("that I have met") remains the same.
PS was it not just mentioned on this blog that Beatty upon seeing Charlie Baumans tiger act that he thought that was the about best tiger act he had seen????

Hey Chic
"Flash or Trash"?
Ah a fellow face booker

How many out there remember the fifty-three Beatty show? Tommy absolutely stole the show. If Beatty had been a lesser man he would have been jealous but he knew how much the Hannefords added to the show. He gave them half a railroad car and good money for several years. Tommy told me many times how nice Beatty had been to them.

JC Hall said...

As earlier stated the bottom line Tommy Hanneford was a
(Great Showman)
I can remember the first time I saw him do the Sanger Riding Academy with his mom. Great bit.

Sorry Jimmy (& sorry to Barbara)

but I don't do FaceBook or anything

else in "social media" as I find

1 computer addiction is sufficient

That would be "Buckles Brigade"

Flash & Trash is an expression I

picked up from our dearly departed

Bobby Johnsen long long ago

These comments have opened up the subject of legitamate trainers versus oresenters. Now I would suggest that in my years I have become aware that alot of animal acts finished and polished by good trainers have had a very inconpicuous beginning under the hand of one or even more people. I can name a number of acts and people and am sure Jimmy would know the same or others. Another thought. I understand that t6he tiger act that Charlie Barnum brought to Ringling had actually been trained by someone else and we certainly admire his marvelous act over the years he has replaced tigers in the act as need be and even addedto it to have 12 bin the cage, but I do not believe he evewr trained an act from scratch he did train an eight pony liberty that waswas presented for a time by Dinah Stephenson.
