Simian Impersonators #1 (From Eric Beheim)


Our earliest example of a simian impersonator is this un-identified performer whose art was immortalized in a 1909 Italian-made “chase” comedy titled The Monkey Race.

Many early silent films used performers from music halls and vaudeville who did their specialty turns for the camera, little suspecting that “the flickers” would eventually help to bring about the demise of the very theaters they performed in.
