In the 1933 original, King Kong was represented as being 18 feet high in the jungle scenes set on Skull Island. This proportion was originally selected to provide an effective dramatic relationship between Kong and the players. Although this scale was adjusted to suite the dramatic needs of some of the scenes, Kong was never so gigantic as to destroy his interest in the human players. When the action shifted to New York City, the 18-foot Kong came across on screen as too little, so the scale was changed to make him 24 feet high. In the film’s publicity, he was referred to as being fifty feet high.
