I'm not confident that this is by Connecticut fan Ray Dirgo who almost always signed his work. At first I thought it was from the route book as similar cartoons sometimes graced a page (and the image posted is about the correct height to width ratio) but it is not in the books for when Chrys Holt was on the show.
Its style also reminds me of the work of Baltimore Sun cartoonist Jim Hartzell who would often spend time at the Venice winter quarters and was a good friend of several star performers. I first met Jim about 1972, long before I moved to this city, and he sent me some of his circus drawings. I'll try to dig some of them out at a later date.
In 1954 when Baltimore got a major league baseball team, Jim created the first Oriole bird. It adorned the front page of the Sun paper for years in a box reporting the score with the cartoon bird reflecting his strong attitude about that day's game. The cartoon bird retired in 1979 in favor of, as explained, a more "ornithologically correct bird.” Finally, a cartoon bird returned at the end of 2011 and we've had a winning season ever since! Most every night as I listen to the game I also hear ads promoting sunny Sarasota because the Orioles winter season begins as soon as the tent of Circus Sarasota pitched on the parking lot by Ed Smith Stadium comes down. Dick: For some reason I could not post a comment for a couple of days. I agree it does look a lot like Jim Hartzell's work. Years ago when Gunther & Sigrid were guest speakers at the Kelly Tent banquet (SRO of course)in Hagerstown, I took a couple of photos of Jim with Gunther. He said if I mailed him copies of the pix he would send me a window board size original of his work (somewhat similar to this one). I did and he did. A very nice and talented gentleman.
By coincidence the same thing happened with Ray Dirgo, except it took me years to get a couple of Dirgo original CIRCUS drawings. He initially sent us Flintstone's stuff.
