While the Ringling train was making its way into Cleveland in 1965, it suffered a derailment or some other sort of mishap that caused the unloading and set-up to fall far behind schedule. According to an article that ran in THE WHITE TOPS, the Circus’ first performance in Cleveland was a rather makeshift affair. Merle Evans was still rehearsing the local bandsmen right up to the time the evening performance was supposed to start. Henry Ringling North came out and made an announcement to explain what had happened. Not all of the acts were able to go on. Only one elephant appeared, worked by Hugo in the center ring.
