1965 RBBB TV Special #29

Another much-appreciated highlight of the 1965 TV Special is Charly Baumann’s tiger act. This would have been his second year with Ringling, when his act was somewhat different from the one that most of us remember from the 1970s. In his autobiography, Baumann mentions meeting Clyde Beatty, who told him that his was the best tiger act he had ever seen. This is essentially the same act that Beatty saw.

Adela Smieia’s lion act was also with Ringling that year.

Back then the tigers were owned by

Ada Auredan (part of another story)

'64 was Charly's 1st year over here. In our overnight jumps in the Cadillac, Mr. Beatty told me many stories of the other trainers he knew and visited, some recently. He spoke of George Keller visiting him, and of Pat Anthony. He never said a word about Charly Baumann. It was generally accepted that when he left the Ringling holdings in '34, he never set foot on a Ringling lot again. When was he supposed to have seen and visited the Ringling show in '64, and met up with Charly? Remember, he left the show in Rochester, Minnesota, to have his 1st cancer surgery in Chicago. I was with him there, and returned to the show in Crawfordsville, Indiana. A few towns later, Charly and Bob Dover visited the show, hoping to see Beatty, who did not return that season. They both had comments about their disappointment in not seeing him, and in what they did see in the arena. No one talked of a visit between Beatty and Charly at any time. It's not surprising Charly would make a claim like this for his book, but how is this verified?
