SWAN LAKE has been one of my all-time favorite ballets since I first heard the music back when I was 13. This is the ballet that was featured in the recent hit film THE BLACK SWAN.
24 web girls surrounded Vicky &
they were all together in unison
thanks to Antoinette's patience
(& Dickie's screaming)
24 webs & NO chain motors hung from
the outriggers on the main frames
In his book BIG TOP BOSS – JOHN RINGLING NORTH AND THE CIRCUS, David Lewis Hammarstrom devotes several pages to discussing the SWAN LAKE aerial ballet. Apparently JRN agreed to engage Trolle Rhodin’s brother Teddy (ballet master at the Royal Opera in Stockholm) to assist Richard Barstow with this number. This did not sit well with Barstow, who threatened to go back to New York. In the end, Teddy’s contribution consisted of a few basic ballet steps for the girls to do on their way to the webs.
