Although the narrator doesn’t identify the cubs’ “foster mother” by name, she is Helen Martini, whose husband Fred was the head keeper of the Bronx Zoo’s lion house. (Fred was a jeweler before he quit his job, with Helen’s encouragement, to work for the Zoo.)
