Parley Baer #1 (From Chic Silber)

"For many years I had heard of Parley but only in the sense that he was Ernestine Clark's husband.
Shortly after we agreed to take the job on the Polack Show he called welcoming us aboard.
That same night my wife and I went to a movie about a Haunted House and there in credits was his name and I said, "That's the guy that called today! I'm sure I'll recognize his voice"......and I did.
Louie Stern always called him Polly Bear!."

I recall that he portrayed Ozzie's

friendly neighbor on the television

show "Ozzie & Harriet" & I met him

in the 70's while visiting friends

on the Miller Johnson show

Parley Baer also did a lot of radio work, appearing in hundreds of old radio dramas. He created the role of Chester in the original radio version of GUNSMOKE. (The character's full name was Chester Wesley Proudfoot.) When the show moved over to TV, none of the radio cast members were used.

Parley told me that when he was added to the cast he was only listed as "Citizen" in the script until one day the show was running short and the Director signaled for him to stretch his lines, so he came up with, "Well Sheriff, as sure as my name is Chester W. Proudfoot those Indians are just over that hill!", or words to that effect.
He added,"You can imagine how I felt when the TV people told me that I didn't fit the character.
Christ! I gave birth to him."

Parley Baer was honored during the recent CFA convention when the Fans visited LA Circus. A great example of the continuing relationship between Hollywood and the circus.
