Five years ago I visited Ward Hall and his side show at the Frederick (Md) Fair and he had four people on his payroll that could swallow swords though only one was paid for presenting in the show. Ward recalled when it was once not so common or quite so simple to book someone who could send a sword "down the hatch without a scratch." Swallowing swords has become a big thing among the many young people who now endeavor to enter the business--and even among some non-pros. At the Side Show Gathering at Wilkes Barre in 2002 I witnessed 50 swords swallowed at the same time by 19 people--and the Guinness records judge was there, of course! These enthusiasts set all kinds of records such as swallowing a sword while suspended 200 feet above Niagara Falls or while doing a back flip at the same time! Dick Flint Baltimore
