On April 22, 1992, we were right in the middle of an evening performance of BYE, BYE BIRDIE, starring Tommy Tune, when a rather strong earthquake occurred. The show was appearing in the old Fox Theater in downtown San Diego, and the tremor was strong enough to shake loose small chunks of plaster from the proscenium arch, which landed in the orchestra pit. We looked up and could see people starting to make their way out of the balcony. (I don’t recall if Tommy Tune was on stage at the time or not.) We all figured that the show would be stopped, but surprisingly it wasn’t. No more tremors occurred and we got through the rest of the performance without incident. After the performance, my wife picked me up at the stage door and, while we were driving home, we listened to news reports of earthquake damage that had occurred around the county. I still have a small piece of plaster that landed next to my chair in the orchestra pit and which I picked up as a souvenir. Chic, the next time you see Tommy Tune, ask him about the earthquake in San Diego.
