You once mentioned to me the clue that gave you Denman joining the Sells show in Australia. Wasn't it something like a "Deafy" listed in the route book?
Going thru the Sells route books at the Library in Baraboo the name "Deafy" was listed during the Australian tour.
I figured that was probably when he joined out.
To the left is hippo den no, 88. It is shown here with steel tired wheels. They were replaced with pneumatic tires in 1935.
The den itself was built for the 1924 season so the date of the photo is between those years.
No. 88 was last on the road in 1947.
The wording on the sideboards reads, “LARGEST LIVING HIPPOPOTAMUS IN CAPTIVITY.” That title remained on the cage though 1940.
