From Kari Johnson

The Hollywood Edition of Vanity Fair features Tai on the fold-out and several places inside. It is so cool! Animal rights extremist groups are urging their members to write to the editor of Vanity Fair Magazine to protest the use of Tai. Please write and let him know how much you love it. Thanks! ~Kari

Dear Mr. Carter,
I just wanted to write to let you know how much I enjoyed seeing Tai the elephant on your cover! She is a truly magnificent animal; highly intelligent and extremely well trained. And beautiful too! I have always had a very keen interest in anything to do with elephants since I was a young child and I have been following her career since she was in Operation Dumbo Drop! I haven’t seen her much since the movie Water for Elephants, so your cover really made my day!
As you may already know, the Asian elephant is an endangered species, so much so that they do not have much of a chance of avoiding extinction in the wild. Within a few decades, without elephants in captivity, the species will be gone, for good. Tai, other elephants like her and the wonderful people who dedicate their lives to caring for and training them, are all working very hard to try to ensure their survival.
One of the toughest things they are up against today are the Animal Rights extremists who insist that all captive elephants are tortured and in constant agony; beaten into submission and living in horrible conditions. This is so far from the truth with any reputable elephant owner, but especially with the people who train and take care of Tai.
These Animal Rights extremists are the same organizations that are now being discovered; one after the other, as organizations that are actually against ALL animals in captivity, including our own dogs and cats. They want to see all animals either free, which is simply not possible, or dead, which is to me, a horrifying thought. Ingrid Newkirk, founder of PeTA, has said exactly that, many times: “I would rather see an animal dead than in captivity”.
They are also the same people who now have to cough up millions of dollars to Feld Entertainment Inc., the owners of Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, who they maliciously hounded for years claiming their elephants were being abused. Well, they lost, and now they are being ordered to pay Feld millions for being found guilty of fraud, racketeering, and more! Google it, it makes fascinating reading! So far, the USPCA has to pay out $9.3 Million, and there’s more to come, we’ll see! It is being discovered that it might be very costly to support the Animal Rights extremists!
The reason I am writing all this is because I am sure that you will be hearing from the AR activists, protesting Tai on the cover of your magazine, because they are organized and they send the word out to all their followers who have been brainwashed with their propaganda any time anything ‘elephant’ or ‘circus’ appears anywhere. Because actual animal caregivers are usually too busy to be able to follow what slanderous things the AR activists are saying, and too busy taking care of their animals to be able to write, it usually ends up that people like you only hear from the activists!
So Mr. Carter, all I want to say is, thanks for supporting well taken care of performing animals! You may be up against some flack from this, but people who truly love animals and want them to survive are behind you all the way!
Sincerely, Wendy Tucker
