We're just home from a 10 day tour of India where we saw plenty of interaction between tourists and elephants. The Indian government is taking steps to protect the working elephants that serve the tourist industry. There is a new limit of 2 riders per howdah and elephants are limited to 3 trips per day on the longer journeys. The mahouts said that they seldom if ever use bull hooks but control their elephants with voice commands and signals from their bare feet. The elephants we saw, for the most part, looked in good physical condition. Most of the working elephants were born in captivity. This was an unbelievable trip. Bob Momyer
Mom is off camera holding her child elephant guide, otherwise he wouldn't be doing this painful thing.
I may have sent this in before but this great pic reminded me of the time Diane and I were at a show and the woman in front of us made a comment about how cruel it was to make an elephant stand on its hind legs. I leaned forward and said, "Excuse me Ma'am, but how do you think they mate, in the missionary position." Can't remember her reaction, but I do remember she shut up.
