A Circus Wakes Up #1 (From Eric Beheim)

When I was in the first grade (which would have been in late 1952 or early 1953) this film was shown at a school assembly. (Back then, it was a big deal to us whenever a film was shown in school!) Although the circus it was filmed on is not identified, it is clearly a European show. (Some of you might be able to identify which circus it is and can enlighten the rest of us.) The film has a copyright date of 1949, so these scenes were probably filmed that year or maybe in 1948.

The circus featured in this documentary is the Austrian Circus Rebernigg, which was founded in the mid-nineteenth century, and lasted until 1969. It was Austria's most important circus. Based in Vienna, Circus Rebernigg toured Austria and the neighboring countries. In 1964, it became known as Österreichischer National Circus (Austrian National Circus). This circus, with that title, was acquired in 1973 by Elfi Althoff-Jacobi, who later (in 1993) sold it to Louis Knie. The elephant with crossed tusks seems to have been Bubi, a male elephant who was euthanized (apparently, it had become dangerous) the year the film was shot (1949).
