"Lizzie" #1 (From Buckles)

On the subject of Hagenbeck-Wallace, included are shots of Cheerful Gardner's favorite elephants in what appears to be some sort of Elephant Empress Frolic in the back yard.
"Lizzie" seen here, had a big square head, good for making mounts as we would later learn with "Anna May".

In a nutshell the Hagenbeck animals were a sensation at the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair.
So much so that the Carl Hagenbeck Circus was formed and toured both Mexico and the U.S. but eventually failed.
The animals and equipment were purchased by Ben Wallace owner of the Great Wallace Shows and took the liberty of including the Hagenbeck title.
This resulted in International law suits that were eventually dismissed.

Yes, they were. The Hagenbecks puprpose in bringing action was to reclaim their name from use by the scurrilous Ben Wallace. He was known in the industry and throughout towns on his route as dishonest, and the upright Hagenbecks were devastated to have their reputation tarnished by this unwilling association. In world courts, Wallace prevailed. After this bitter decision, oddly enough, what remained titled Hagenbeck-Wallace was known familiarly to showfolks as "the Wallace show".
