"Tavern on the Green" has a great history. The building was built in 1870 originally as the barn where sheep were housed that grazed on Central Park's "Sheep Meadow". It was remodeled and became a restaurant in 1934 and closed in 2009, seven years after its owner Warner LeRoy died. Just to prove that revenue doesn't always mean profit and success, in 2007 "Tavern on the Green" generated $38M, making it the second highest grossing restaurant in America.
"Tavern on the Green" is currently being renovated and is scheduled to reopen next Summer as a casual restaurant - much different from the elegant dining that defined the restaurant for about 70 years.
"Tavern" has been featured in many movies including "Ghostbusters" and a well-known Folger's coffee commercial ("We’ve secretly replaced the fine coffee they usually serve with Folgers Crystals...Let's see if anyone can tell the difference!"
They had great food and drinks in the upper price range. Those in the know could usually hop a ride in a limo parked out front by slipping the driver a few bucks while his clients were inside dining. Bob Momyer
Through our son-in-law's parents, we got to know Jeffrey Higginbottom, design collaborater for Tavern On The Green and the Russian Tea Room. In addition to his design pursuits, he also illustrated children's books. A very talented and affable guy who sadsly passed away in 2006.
Warner LeRoy was the inspiration for Great Adventure in NJ..He designed many buildings at the park with alot of special thought..He was a passionate gentleman that loved to come to my elephant barn and see the babies..really nice man..
