From Chris Berry

As you know many of the items posted on this blog are for American circuses. I am hoping that one of your readers might be able to help provide some information on this poster for the European "Circus C. Althoff". It is a little larger than an American half-sheet, and it dates from 1966. That's all that I know about it. Any additional information on either "Circus C. Althoff" or these performers would be greatly appreciated...

Circus Carl Althoff was a fairly big show, seating about 3000. Carl Althoff had two sons, Corty and Giovanni who both had there own shows in the 70s,80s and 90s. At one time in the late 60s the had a show together called Gebruder Althoff and in this time the had 38 elephants on the show, 20 in one act in a 13 meter ring. About 42'.
In that time they had 4 cage act's on the show, polar bears, lions, tigers and a mixed act with cats and bears. Fantastic show with great acts. The train had about 60 flat cars and 10 stock cars. It all fell apart because the brothers and the father could not get along with each other.

The clown act was a Family called Bentos. The had worked in my Families Circus for about 20 years,
starting in the late 30s. The where Jews and during the war the where on Circus Williams and my uncle, Adolf Althoff, hid them in a secret place every time the Gestapo came looking for Jewish people. In the 80s he was recognized for that and received a medal from the German Government and one from the Israeli Government. Pictured is the the father Peter Bento on the left and his sons Janos and Peter
