Like Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Crabbe was an Olympic swimming champion with an excellent physique. (In 1931, he had been one of the local college men tested by MGM for TARZAN THE APE MAN.) Based on the success of that film, Crabbe was hired by Paramount to play Kaspa the Lion Man in KING OF THE JUNGLE. (Kaspa was an obvious Tarzan rip-off; instead of having been raised by apes like Tarzan, Kaspa had been raised by lions.) Crabbe later got to play TARZAN in the 1933 serial TARZAN THE FEARLESS. He is probably best remembered for having played Flash Gordon in three serials in the 1930s.
