Kirk and Ann Douglas have built dozens of playgrounds in reclaimed vacant lots all around Los Angeles. Kirk himself, at 96, turns up regularly at the Los Angeles Mission soup kitchen, on the notorious Skid Row, helping to feed the homeless, then often dons an apron and helps wash the dishes. Mrs. Douglas, close to her husband in age, is active with the Ann Douglas Shelter for Women, also in the Skid Row district, which has salvaged countless women from the streets, and lives of alcohol, drugs, and prostitution. They are both in regular attendance promoting the Kirk Douglas Theatre, in Culver City. This venue is part of a thriving trio, including the Ahmanson and Mark Taper Theatres. The Kirk Douglas features plays by new authors, performed by up and coming talent both in the technical and creative aspects of new careers. If Kirk or Ann either one has slowed down, one is hard pressed to notice it.
