Pullin' em up!

This is George Williams (Rex's younger brother) working "Tena" with Kelly-Miller in 1951.
In the background you can see a second elephant working the other side.
We only gave matinees on Sunday but the show always remained on the lot after tear down so the entry into Monday's town during it's morning activities were carried out as usual.
This contraption was a flat plate with a slot in it's side was used for the iron but if the lot was soft the tail of the collar chain was required for the wooden stakes.

One of my fondest memories of something we'll no longer see is walking along at night as an elephant pulled up wooden stakes. She'd lean down, the rope would be spun around the stake, then she'd pull up and lumber along to the next. I think it was Kelly-Miller a few years back. Well trained, almost no voice commands, and the end of circus day for yet another small town. Unfortunately, its now an end of an era.

Did George work with animals in the show?
