This routine is almost 200 years old and when it began was known as the Courier of St. Petersburg. The postal carrier (hence, called the post) on his way to St. Petersburg would pass through various country stops, each time the rider picking up another set of reins as the new horse entered and passed between his legs. Last done in the US by Gunther Gebel-Williams in the 1970s and then by Katja Schumann on Big Apple a couple of different years as best I recall. Nice report and many thanks Vincent. Many thanks for this description of the Courier of St. Petersburg and glad to hear that you enjoyed this short report. In Europe we have the chance to be able to see "La Poste" in several shows like Knie, Alexis Gruss or Richter. This year, the Swiss National Circus KNIE presents a double Post with 4 friesians and 11 arabians horses. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of this really amazing presentation (the Circus KNIE does not allowed pictures anymore...).
Hi Dick, Gunther didn't do the post,I did. After the act I got of and Gunther jumped on the horses and rode them down the track galloping. That was in the first year, after that I did the exit as well.
Henry, my sincere apologies, of course! What I do remember very accurately is how it stirred my blood when I first saw it, both for what the act is (wow!) and its very historic roots. Glad you spoke up to take proper credit. Hope your health is improving. I'm sure readers would welcome an update. Dick Flint Baltimore
