Circus Krone began in 1872 as the Continental Menagerie. Carl Krone, age 18, joined the menagerie in 1888 presenting a wild animal act as “Monsieur Charles.” In 1900 he took control of the show and in 1902 renamed it as Menagerie Charles. He married in 1900 and in 1904 his wife Ida, seen here as ”Miss Charles,” took over his act of 24 lions. In 1905 the menagerie became a full-fledged circus re-named as Circus Charles and then in 1913 was renamed Circus Krone. Influenced by the reputation of the Barnum and other big American shows, by 1924 Circus Krone featured three rings and two stages. Its big German rival at the time was Circus Sarrasani. Both had permanent buildings in Munich (for Krone) and Dresden and both were destroyed in World War II. Krone survived the war and its first performance after the war was for General Patton’s birthday. In 1950 it built a new structure in Munich that, I believe, was later replaced by the present structure which long featured three different month-long winter circus shows in Munich. Krone built the new building in 1962, in that time very modern with a free hanging cupola. The old building from 1950 was a wooden structure.
