In what Winston Churchill (who was there) described as a “victory snatched from the jaws of peril!” the Brits withstand the charge and win the battle. In the film, the Mahdists’ defeat is symbolized by these riderless camels. (In setting up this shot, the director might well have shouted to his assistants, “Bring on the empty camels.”)
