From Dennis Younger

This is a fresh photo from the Chiang Mai Zoo in Northern Thailand. Anyone with .75 cents in his pocket can feed the jaguar. Skewers are pre-loaded with meat chunks. The jaguar's cage is as big as any outdoor cage I have seen in many countries, however, of course the corner where the snack is offered gets most of the cats attention. Dennis Younger

Sure hope you got to visit the Maesa
elephant camp up in the hills above
Chiang Mai while you were there

In the lush tropical jungle of
Chiang Mai's Maesa mountains, a big
family of elephants lives side by
side with their mahout caretakers
caretakers . "Maesa Elephant Camp"
is home to one of the largest
assembly of elephants in the north
of Thailand

When I visited this elephant camp

some years back they had between

70 & 80 elephants of all ages

Of my recollections there are tiny

shacks along the hill walk to the

camp where local folks sell bunches

of tiny bananas 4" to 5" in length

I watched 1 older woman with a full

stalk of these she had taken into

the camp stand in front of a BIG

male & proceed to break off 1 at a

time & offer it to this incredibly

patient fellow that waited & ate

each 1 at a time when he could have

taken her & the bananas with ease

Lots of elephant camps in this area. I will be here for 2 years so plenty of time.
My rented house is only 7 miles from Chiang Mai Night Safari and 10 from the Chiang Mai Zoo and Aquarium. Both are immense in size which is pretty much a detriment. The tram and skyrail will take you around but it is too fast to really appreciate the animals.

The Dusit Zoo in Bangkok (where the

King's "white" elephants are kept

in a magnificent temple structure

& allowed to trek among spectators

to the lake to bathe at will) as well

as the Chiang Mai Zoo are under the

same Zoological association control
