From Buckles #2

These guys were so impressed with my dashing appearance that they had me order these uniforms and gave me their winter time "rockin'-chair" checks to pay for them.
This picture taken at the Minneapolis Shrine date and includes "Colonel".
Alas these outfits didn't last long, I suppose they weren't designed to be worn 24 hours a day.

Yes it is!
The pride of Bowling Green, Ohio.

When did he switch affiliations

I knew him on the Beatty Show

Buckles said...

He started out with the Mills Show then to Kelly-Miller and I think he accompanied Freddy to the Beatty Show in 1970.

Rumour, confirmed to me by Freddie is that before Freddie actually went to his new job on BC he sent Cline in advance and when Cline advised him that the elephant "Bee" had not downed him Freddie joined the show. K.Y. told me that on Mills Cline would not stay in the sideshow and watch the elephants from messing with the quarter poles,so KY chained him to INdia and on the Side Show come in it was unsettling for the town people to see a man chained to an elephant. Incidentally during these times we had two Robert Clines;n one known as "little Bobby Cline" and the other known as "Dirty Neck"Cline. This photo is the latter.

This is first for me to see those two guys look that good.
Usually they were quite dirty and seedy lookin.
Chic, like you I remember Robert Dale Cline on the Beatty Cole show.

My favorite Robert vs Bobby Cline

story was a time in Philadelphia

when Col Roy Zinser had set up an

early morning interview with the

Enquirer for Robert & a young lady

reporter showed up before the Col

& was told to find him around the

elephants & came upon Bobby first

A few of us overheard her talking

to Bobby mistaken for Robert and

were bent over laughing at answers

such as what he did before joining

"I worked on a garbage truck"

the guy on left is legendary John Carroll who was with Dory forever; gruff character with a good heart--

Robert also spent some time on the King show in about 1976.

out of the box upon delivery

Is the man on the left John Carroll?

Roger Smith said...

Having just asked if this were John Carroll, a closer look discovers his initials above his left pocket, JRC. And we see RDC above his co-worker's pocket for Robert Dale Cline.

The other veteran elephant man of the same name had the rather disdainful nickname of "Paddlefoot" Bobby Cline.

I met Bobby "Dirty Neck" Cline when he was on Sells & Gray. They were appearing in Grawn, Michigan at the time. The State Police came to the lot with the message that one of Bobby's relatives had passed away and they were going to give him a ride to the bus station. It was just a short conversation and I failed to get a picture of hime before he left.

Robert Dale Cline had Ola and Conti on the King Show in 1978...Shortly after that he went to Chehaw State Park in Georgia. Big Bobby, as we called him at the time, always sported a layer of grit and grime, but he was really was a great guy!

I am so excited my brother found this!!! Uncle Bobby is a huge part of my own happy childhood memories.....I clearly remember riding On Conti and Ola. The day the circus came to town was always a huge day of family and fun, from breakfast on the grounds to watching the big top go up!!! Thank you so very much for sharing!!!

To Alex

Your great uncle was a terrific

fellow & was a good friend to all

Aside from his being an excellent

elephant hand he was knowledgable

of much circus elephant history

as I recall he was also known as

"stiff neck Cline" for his stance

Chic,
Thanks for replying so quickly, do you have any other links or pics you could share? I absolutely adored Uncle Bobby and counted the days until the circus came around again. I actually rode one of his younger elephants before I was even born, my mom tells me she wanted to ride but he absolutely would not let her ride an adult in "her state"! Do you know any date on this pic?

I only have 1 fairly good photo

of Robert with Fred Logan that

I'll send to Buckles that may

have come from a show fan years

ago but if you send an E address

I'll send it to either of you

I believe that elephant's name

was spelled "Konti" with a K

Unknown said...

Thank you, that would be wonderful! Aklpnbmc@yahoo.com

I was pretty young then so I very well could have the spelling wrong! Lol
