Fay and Cecil B. Demille on the set of The Greatest Show On Earth
The inscription is faded but says:
To Fay Alexander with thanks and something about working with you
CB Demille
I note that Fay is receiving a coin or medal (which was a custom from Demille to the cast). Fay received it graciously carrying a bottle of beer and a smoke.
One day, working with Sally Field on her short-lived series THE COURT, at Raleigh Studios, I had a 3-hour break. OK, if you must know--I was an extra, booked out of Cenex, Central Casting's non-union extra division--Sally and I didn't exactly co-star. For those 3 hours, since Sally wasn't inclined to sit and jackpot, I did a walking tour of Hollywood Forever Cemetery. There I was taken by the shared amusement many feel when they come to the massive DeMille above-ground crypt. He and his family are at the back of the cemetery, right at the fence which separates it from the North end of Paramount Pictures. Many agree that even in death, old C.B. insists on overseeing the sound stages still within haunting proximity.
