Sir Harry Johnston's discovery of the okapi did not go unnoticed by Walter L. Main who was eager to capitalize. This ad was for his stand in Atlanta in 1902, the very next year after the animal was officially discovered. He copied Sir Harry's drawing exactly. Main did not claim that he had the animal but the implication was clear to anyone who had followed the excitement of the discovery. Of course the Main show had no such animal. |
