From Mike Naughton #1

This is a publicity shot taken in the fall of 72 at Clown College.

Can you id the elephant? I am guessing it might be John but that is just a wild guess.
It might be an elephant birthday party. The photo is on the Clown College facebook page with no additional information.

From Buckles
It's not "John", no ivory and the absence of paraphernalia indicate both shows were still on the road.
The ill fitting blanket and the handler trying unsuccessfully to get out of the picture suggest it might have been a local elephant brought in for the occasion.
In short.....I don't have a clue.

Mike asked me if the man blowing out the candle might be Hugo Schmitt.
It's possible, how could I have forgotten that the Billy Smart elephants had been purchased and were in Venice in 1972, particularly since I took over that herd the following year.
Maybe some of my guys might know if this looks like that gimpy "Tagu"?

i think that is Hugo (looking more relaxed and playful than i can remember) as he had retired from the road (imagine all those amazing years behind him!) by then and i remember Ballantine calling on him occasionally (since he was nearby) for Clown College events, such as elephant riding classes and graduation.

You might be on to something there Capt with Tagu? Look at the right hind leg, Tagu's legs when every direction but straight and he was one of the smallest elephants in the big herd. Too large to be the Minyak, Mala herd?
