Interesting item about an early Housecar built in Ruskin By John Powell This is one of several housecars built by my grandfather Chester A. Sidelinker. This was built in 1934, at their former home on US Highway 41, in Ruskin, near where the post office is located today. My grandparents loved to travel and would take the housecar as far as California. From Buckles: Speaking of Ruskin, this is a busy week for me. I must get the Blog wrapped up early so I'll have the dogs pissed off, the cats and coons in the barn fed and my 30 minutes on the treadmill by 7:00 so I can drive Pat to his High School (three exits up the Interstate) for Marching Band practice plus drop off Kay at Dance School in Greater Down Town Ruskin itself. After my regular rounds of chores I will have clocked about 50 miles. |

They have been moved in for about a week now and the only major things lacking are TV and Telephone service both of which will be provided by Shannon's employer Brighthouse at a great discount but at their leisure time. Dalilah enjoys the same benefit with Verizon.
We have a local guy that will do the landscaping and driveway and I am told that in about a month the final thing will be a check underneath to see if everything is settling OK and the placement of the skirting.
Sounds like you can look forward to
more yunguns to chauffer around if
the TV isn't restored quickly
Give them my very best wishes for
many happy years in the new joint
Isn't it funny that...the closer you are to "home," the L O N G E R the "miles" are!!!
...was a time that we looked forward to a mere 50-mile jump!

Loved the housecar pictures. According to a 1935 letter written by Harry Shell to Burns Kattenberg, my great-grandfather, William H. 'Dad' Whitlark lived in a housecar "...winter and summer for about fifteen years. The carving over the door was taken from one of the old Van Amberg (sic) wagons years ago." I have a picture, supplied by Harry Shell, that shows 'Dad' & an unidentified woman standing in front of the housecar. I assume this is the same housecar that is pictured in the colorized photo taken by your mother of 'Dad' & labeled by you as Russell Bros. 1933 #5 in a 7 Jan 2011 post.
