Chic, as a young man I was taught to ride by Arthur Konyot (The White Rider)who was known as "Pops' by his students at Ambassaror Stables on the near north side of Chicago. (His daughter, Dorita had a stable a few blocks north.)

He was a great guy but I must admit that I had no idea of his circus background in those days. He was just a riding instructor who owned the stable where I like to ride. It wasn't until years later I read his book and realized he guy we knew as "Pops" had a circus history.

He had a stallion named "Prince" and when he wanted to ride his horse, he would call on the intercom, to send down Prince. We could hear him coming down the ramp from the second floor pounding the floor boards.Prince was in full control as was "Pops".
They would challenge each other, man vs horse. After a workout each was exhausted. The display in the ring was wonderful.

As time went on he allowed me to take students on the bridle paths on the north side of Chicago. What a wonderful memory.

The name Konyot has brought this 77year old to remember some of the great memories of growing up in Chicago. Thanks for the memories.

John,
Great story. I never knew you rode at one of the great old Chicago stables. The stable you mention, was that the Ambassador Stable? Was it a three-story stable, or a two-story? It was the favored stable for the "Gold Coast Brats". Were you one of them? :)

Wade it was Ambassador Stable because it was in the alley adjacent to the famed Ambassador Hotel whicch featured the Pump Room. I believe it was three story.

Several times back in the 1950's we would keep our elephants overnight in a down town riding stable in Chicago when we made the Super Circus TV Show.
On one such occasion the D'oyly Carte Opera co. was in town on an American tour.
That evening I saw "Pinafore" with Martyn Green featured plus "Trial By Jury" for a curtain raiser.

The Blackstone which is now owned

& was intended to go to Broadway

my camel now resides here in our

sunroom under the window card

I have been reading so much about Tina Konyot and her famous father, but no mention of her mother. Josephine Berosini the famed high wire performer.

Regards.
