From Jerry Digney #5

50 YEARS AGO: Charly Baumann does one more turn with his tigers at Circus Krone, Munich, in Winter 1963, before embarking for AMERICA on his long and successful cat act and circus managerial career with RINGLING. Years ago, I learned that the cats originally belonged to the German circus (Busch-Roland?) and were later bought by Ringling so the act, for all its illustrious attachment to Charly, was always, i believe, a HOUSE ACT.

When Charly came to RBBB his cats

were owned privately by a woman

whose name currently escapes me

She sold the tigers to the show

In a similar situation it was

Carola Williams who sold all her

animals to the show as well

Ada Auredan was the owner that sold

the tigers to the show

Jerry,
"all its illustrious attachment to Charly," is truly ridiculous. The same held true for GGW and many others. If I buy an airplane, that doesn't make me a pilot. That just makes me an airplane owner, and my sole responsibility is to keep it maintained and fueled for the pilot. The exact same sentiment is true for animals. The owners sole responsibly it to keep them fed and maintained. Charly, GGW, and many others owned/own their minds, body, and spirit. The most important part, as it is what brings the people. The "pride of ownership" pales in comparison to the "pride of achievement" in the animal world.

Before Charly came over I had never

seen the European elegant style of

cat acts only the more exciting

fighting acts of new world circus

I hold both Beatty & Baumann in

the highest regard of each of them

I have had the very good fortune

of seeing a great many of each and

have had much respect for several

including a few mixed with comedy

According to the rest of the story the act was owned by said circus and Charlie was under some sort of permanent agreement with circus owner lady and then when Feld did buy the act Charlie was relieved o f his commitment and got married. tanglefoot
