The French circus site www.aucirque.com is reporting that the former circus elephant Java has passed away of natural causes at the Lyon, France Zoo.

Java was given to the zoo by Cirque Amar in 1964.

She was documented as being 67 years old, making her the oldest elephant in captivity in Europe.

Rest in Peace Java. You are a glowing testament to the good care and personal attention that Circus and Zoo elephants have and should receive. 67 years in peace and harmony with humans as opposed to being slaughtered and hacked apart in the wild by greedy, avaricious poachers.

I enjoyed meeting Wolfgang Holzmair his first season over here on the Blue Unit. I'm looking for the print he signed for me, taken with some sort of fish-eye lens--Harry In Texas, are you listening?--that gave the entire act of some 20 lions an eerie distortion that still made a great photo. An interpreter helped him find the right word for the shot--"Unique! Dees one for you eess UNIQUE!" He would not remember me, but I'd like to meet up with Wolfgang again. Word was, he and Charly Baumann did not enjoy one another's company.
