1942 National Geographic #1 (From Eric Beheim)

70 years ago this month, the following three photos appeared in the August 1942 issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC as part of an article on South Africa. This first one was taken when the manager of an Oudtshoorn ostrich farm arranged an “ostrich derby” for the author to photograph. Once the derby got underway, however, the riders were unable to guide their birds, which took off in all directions.

Reminds me of Kenny Dodd's ostrich

walkaround prop that was marvelous

(I think it's in my warehouse)

Somebody must have a photo of it

Is that the one Mark Anthony carved and Kinko later used?

Reminds me of a story my dad told me about him and bobby ostrich race at the KY fair I think. Bobby didn't tell him how to guide it.

I'm fairly certain that Kenny made

that ostrich himself but I'll check

dinner gathering at the club to

honor both Mary Jane Miller & also

Jackie LeClaire last night & he

said the ostrich was built by

clown Harry Johnson

Quite a nice turnout but we missed
