Elephant Capture #2

The expedition’s supplies and equipment were transported in heavy covered wagons pulled by teams of elephants. (These elephants appear to me to be smaller and a different breed from the big African elephants that were recently discussed on this blog.)

These are different than the usually seen African elephants. They are forest elephants, Loxodonta Cyclotis. They are now recognized as a totally separate species. They inhabit the rain forest areas so central and western Africa. They are characterized by tusks that tend to point straight down, and these photos certainly show that.

The station at Gangala na bodio in the eastern Congo had both these elephants and the common plains or bush Africans, Loxodonta Africana. Two shipments of elephants from Gangala brought back a mixture of both. First there was that of Howard Bary who came back with them in 1936. Next the Bronx zoo bought out more in 1946.
