The Greatest indeed. I saw it under canvas first in '49, with that last chance to see Gargantua. In 2008, as I said here then, a source sufficently well-placed to know, told me that for the 150th edition, all this will be seen again. My question was, where will Feld get the seasoned department heads such a show demands? The source didn't know. Not a word of confirmation or denial has come from anyone else, even after being posted here.

The Tibbels exhibit at the John & Mabel Ringling Museum really shows just how big this really was. Loved the picture! ~frank

1949? Christ Roger! You must be incredibly old.
I saw the show in 1948 and I'm 102.

This photo is said to have been taken in California in 1934, probably LA. That was RBBB 's first trip to the west coast since 1929. There would not be another until 1939.

This is much larger layout than that of 1949. I first saw it in Atlanta in 1937 when it was of the size shown in the photo

Children, children! Let's not argue over who saw RBBB first. But since it came up, I did see it in 1943 with no menagerie tent. Mr and Mrs Gargantua were on display and there were several caged animals in spec. They let military personnel in free and they came in droves. Need I say: A Great Performance!

My folks took me to my first circus in 1939, when I was only 18
months old and I don't remeber a damned thing about it.
