The blog recently mentioned Duggan Bros. This is a 1934 photo from its date in Parsons, KS. The Duggan show was founded and operated in 1934 by a Georgian, W. F. Duggan. His nephew is Stan May of Jonesboro, GA. Stan’s mother was W. F.’s sister and the aunt of W. F. “Dub” Duggan Jr., Stan’s first cousin. W. F. Duggan’s son, Dub, produced the 1951 Hagen-Wallace opera and after that some shopping center shows. As a youngster, Stan May was on various post-World War II wild animal shows owned by his uncle, old W.F. and also on those of his first cousin Dub Duggan. When Atlanta’s new CFA tent was organized in 1970, we charter members named it “Duggan Bros.” On a comic note, at a subsequent CFA national convention, several veteran CFAers, none of whom knew a quarter’s worth of circus history ( including Secretary-Treasurer Herm Linden), told our tent President Doc Fitzpatrick that none of them had never heard of any Duggan Bros. circus; therefore there was no such a thing, and that our the tent had to get a new name. Doc came back all upset and called Joe Bradbury. Joe got angry and told Doc not to listen to such bull from the uninformed, assuring Doc that there was indeed a Duggan Bros. That prompted Joe to write its history - - “Duggan Bros. Circus,” White Tops, Mar-Apr, 1985. |

There have always been a lot of wanabees in the CFA. Always to much socializing and me me as far as I'm comcerned.

It would seem to me Bob that the
word "Fan" says it all & as that
can include anyone that shows an
interest in show business
I have found that many of them
that spout show gospel are about
as reliable as a weather report
Many of them do provide support
& can be very usefull to shows
Chic,
I guess what I should have said that there a lot of fans who do support the circus, but there are some who are more into socializing that anything else.
Then there are to 2 old boys who were watching C&B setup in the
90's and one said to the other that since DR wasn't with the show that day they would probably have to pay for their tickets.

Bob,
The CFA ought to hold their next convention/tent meeting at Showfolks. There are a lot more fist fights, and not near as much socializing.

What a dumb statement from you Wade.johnny
John Milton,
What a dumb statement from you, you mean. Be honest now, how many dust ups have started in the club and finished up outside in the past 5 years? How many heated p*ssing matches? Just the last 5 years, not 25 or 35. It has always been more then just a "social club", and always will be. There are a number of folk's who go there just to start a hey rube. You know it, I know it, and the world knows it. I am not saying it is not a wonderful place for show folks to gather and jack pot and worthy of every effort to keep it going, but it is what it is, given the nature of it's "clientele."
Wade Burck
Very much out of line Wade
All I can say is thank God for the CFA and their support of circuses across this country, not to mention their support and dedication to the causes of "keeping" elephants and other exotic animals in the circus. Without everyone's hard work and dedication, many a good and talented family and their animals who have been in the business for generations will be out of a job with no means to support their family and animals.
As for the Showfolks, I beleive it is more of a "social club" than a "fight club", but if a fight happens...life with circus folks just goes on to the next story.
I always enjoyed having Circus Fans visit on the various Shows I was on...enjoyed em all...Sadly, there are Less and Less every year...
Chic,
How out of line? Which part of the statement wasn't true?
Wade Burck
F. Stapleton,
"will be out of a job with no means to support their family and animals." It seems you are suggesting without the circus, these folks would not have the gumption or ambition to do anything else. Trust me, circus folk are a lot more skilled and resourceful then that.
Wade Burck
Zych,
That's a fact, and you are correct in observing, that like the Shrine club, there are fewer and fewer. Why do you suppose that is? I have my thoughts, but I am wondering what you think?
