We were at Disney's Golden Oaks Ranch, in Placerita Canyon. One day, with the guylines drooping and the bellies sagging, Pacific winds swept through, and the top went wild. Charlie advised Jack Stubbs, the production manager, that the damn thing was about to blow down. With some movie crew assembled, Charlie showed them how to go around and rag out the top. The movie folks clearly resented a circus man knowing what to do and why, and telling them something they had never thought of.

Charlie and I became friends on that picture, and during their time at Jungleland. Periodically, we shot the Santa Monica Mountains, spent nights on the beach at Malibu, and made our wives mad as hell.

Charlie was my chief advocate between Jungleland and his new partner, Charles Germaine. I took the Jungleland Lions over there, and served as Ringmaster/Announcer.
He got me an extra $50 a week for autographing coloring books.
