Ursela, and I believe the bears name is Alaska.
This was 1 of the 4 tremendous guys
that did the march across the arena
Yes it was Alaska that took the
cube of sugar from her lips
Her partner was Manfred Horn
Ursula Bottcher died about a year
ago in her hometown of Dresden
This was her favored bear and he was just a bit over 3m tall standing straight up. He was moved to the zoo in Berlin after she stopped working and she visited him at least four or five times a year.
Hi Henry sure hope you're doing OK
It's about an hour & a half by high
speed "ICE" train from Dresden to
Berlin & the zoo is a short metro
ride from Central Station
German transport really works well
Fantastic zoo in Berlin
When Ursala was at Circus World, the Orlando Sentinel was going to do a piece on her in the Sunday Magazine. She was rehearsing the bears in the theater and the report and photog were there. We were all standing at the ring curb, right outside the cage (me, the two folks from the sentinel, and the two ladies from PR) Ursala had got the bears up into the pyramid pose they did and the big guy was at the peak of the stand. The stand was at the back side of the ring by the tunnel. She got all of them to stand up. I heard one of the guest doors open and turned to the right to see who came in and the photog was running away from the ring into the stands. I turned back to the ring and the big bear (probably Alaska) had moved very quickly form the top of the stand to right in front of me. He had taken offense in the camera lens protruding into "his" cage. The picture was great, made the cover of the sunday magazine. You could see the bear looking at the camera and a blink later he was standing there. Awesome creatures and a nice lady.

I'm not sure if I've still got the magazine cover or not. I'll have to check the file box when I get back home later this week. It was an honor to watch Ursala work her charges every day. They were such big bears and so nimble and lightning fast. Almost as enjoyable as watching Anna Mae and her capable trainers and presenters.
