In a 1957 letter from my Dad: .....Chappie, in response to your question, the best elephant trainers in America today are Mac MacDonald and Hugo Schmitt........and the rest are a sorry lot!
In a taped interview we have, Parley recalls his first work in circus publicity writing--for the Al. G. Barnes show, then in Baldwin Park, in 1936. He had long been associated with KSL Radio, in Salt Lake City, and by then was news director. Visiting the Barnes show was a little out of his line, but he did so well, he was asked to stay around long enough to turn out effective copy for the season. There he first met the redoubtable Mabel Stark. She was Old Circus, instantly leery of outsiders, but Parley's cordial, unaffected manner, and her realization of the value of a good story written about her, drew them together for a friendship that lasted until her death, 32 years later. One of the great coups Parley scored for Mabel was the episode honoring her on THIS IS YOUR LIFE, aired over NBC radio, on April 26, 1950.
