Another reason for my visit to Seabreeze Park was to photograph its 1915 carousel. George Long’s family had purchased it new from the factory and then operated it at Rochester’s Seneca Park Zoo for several years. In 1926, Mr. Long moved it to Seabreeze Park piece by piece, using a Model T truck. . (Its “sister” carousel is still operating at 6 Flags Over Saint Louis.) At the time I took these photos there were no organized carousel fans groups or all the carousel museums, carousel books, carousel merchandize and carousel information that is available today. Instead, a few fans like myself visited and photographed as many old carousels as we could get to and then traded photos back and forth. This was right when many of the traditional old time amusement parks were closing and their carousels were being sold off piece-meal. (I understand that the Illions carousel that was once at Circus World later met this fate.) Today, several companies are making new carousels with fiberglass copies of the original figures. |
