This particular poster dates from 1959 - the first year that the title "Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros" was used. That season several of the posters created by Roland Butler used a large globe logo trumpeting "The Greatest Circus on Earth" Ringling-Barnum cried foul - saying that it infringed on their trademark of "The Greatest SHOW on Earth". The Butler posters with the "Greatest CIRCUS" logo were revised for use in the seasons that followed. As I recall Ol' Whitey posted a few of these during the time that he was on the Beatty-Cole bill car. Perhaps he can enlighten us on how long these "Greatest Circus" posters were used, along with those with the "Clyde Beatty Circus" which I believe continued to be used after the show added "Cole Bros" to the title. |
