I remember a Japanese gentleman on the Ringling Show in 1955 Takeo Usui? that scrambled up and down that rope three times with no balance pole in less time than it took Herbie to do it once.
He made the descents backward, forward and seated.
The best however was Felix Morales who slid down balancing on his head.

Back in the late 40's or early 50's
the Mills show was playing in So. Beloit, IL (mostly because of an accident in Wis where they didn't have a workers compo policy and the state was after them) and one of the performers bought a camel back trunk from a second hand store next to the lot.
That afternoon during the slide for life, the stakes pulled and down came the young lady breaking her leg and going to the hosital.
Between shows, the trunk was burned
and they had to explain to the guy who bought the trunk that he had caused the fall.

TOMMY bENTLEY DID a good slide for life similar to Herbie Weber. Tommy looked good, came out with a fancy cape and was announced as the "great Belmonte Florenz".tanglefoot

Gerda Pedrola did a nice "iron jaw" slide for life when we were on Mills Bros.tanglefoot
