That's quite a bull tub.
Looks like Deafy Denman has her waving that flag with considerable assiduity.

In our act my dad had all three elephants wave American flags while tuirning on spindles for the grand finale while the band played "Stars and Stripes Forever", he shamed the audience in applauding.

Buckles,
That stacked elephant tub deal, has always been an impressive behavior to me. I guess because every elephant I was ever around was so slough footed, you had to coil up water hose's so they wouldn't trip and fall to their knee's. Even in pictures the behavior almost makes me hold my breath.
Knie does a stack tub deal, which is the only one I have seen, with 4 tubs around and one stacked in the middle, with 4 situps and a hind leg stand on the top tub. Very impressive, but nowhere near as tall as some seen in old photographs. I detected a "gaff" to keep the tub from sliding/pushing forward in Knie's act but have not seen a "gaff" in these old photo's. Were the tub's just set on each other, or was there a "gaff" or a way of securing the upper tub?

I imagine the big tub was used for some sort of tableau rather than in an act. Too clumsy.
In this case they would have removed the secondary tubs just for the picture.

A gimmick (or gaff as Wade says)

would be rather simple to do

with either a slight recess in

the center of the lower 1 or

just a few pegs protruding from

the base of the little 1
