During Basel Zoo director Dr. Ernst Lang hippos and rhinos were removed from the pacyderm house, and five young elephant calves were imported in November 1952 from Ruaha National Park in southern Tanganyika, by the zoo itself, through animal dealer August Kuenzler in Arusha, Tanzania.
There were two females, Ruaha and Idunda, and three males; Omari, Katoto and Tembo.
The group was sent in 1956 for training to Circus Knie, which already had 2 africans and Knie were touring 1956 with 7 young africans. The bull Tembo stayed on Knie, and was later sold to Hannover Zoo, where he sired 4 babies:
(F) 1968-06-04 -- † 1968-06-18 Tangi
(M) 1973-03-29 -- † 1979 Hannibal
(F) 1974-09-18 -- † 1974-09-18 miscarriage
(M) 1977-11-27 Kibo, EEP nr: 7704 (Kibo is still living in Boras Zoo in Sweden, where he has sired 3 babies)
Tembo stepped on and fractured his own hindleg after anesthesia in August 1977, and had to be euthanised.
Until his death by 26 years of age, the bull Tembo was kept chained night time in the Hannover stable, which was possible due to the free contact management by elephant keeper Wolfgang Ramin, who worked at Circus Knie before.
Ruaha, Idunda, Omari and Katoto returned to Basel Zoo in November 1956, and can be seen on the picture, together with I think, the Asian Giulia and the Basel head keeper Werner Behrens (came 1952-11-08 from Hagenbecks Tierpark)
Omar attacked an elephant keeper in December 1965, and was euthanised, 13 years old.
Before his death, Omar sired a baby, Ota which was born in January 1966, I guess the baby on the picture must be Ota she was euthanised 1982-11-30 because she was agressive.
Katoto became aggressive and dangerous 1972, and was euthanised, 20 years old.
Idunda died in 1988.
Ruaha was, before her death in 2010, claimed to be the oldest captive african elephant world-wide with 59 years.
List of all records of elephants I have at Basel Zoo: http://www.elephant.se/location2.php?location_id=8&show=6
