MILLER-JOHNSON (1973)

Following Frank Ferrante's posting of two great Circus Vargas posters a few days ago, I wanted to share some of the other outdoor advertising used by Circus Vargas during its early years..

Of course, Circus Vargas has its roots in the Miller Johnson Circus owned by Charles Germaine. This is a poster used with that title in 1973, and is the first in a series of full-color montage one-sheets that were used for the next several seasons following the purchase of the show by Clifford Vargas.

When I took the Jungleland Lions out for Miller-Johnson, for brief tours in '67, '68, and '69, Germain and Charlie Allen were just starting out, and we didn't have anything looking like this. Germain was never to become this elegant, and our programs were ratty little fold-overs.
